Akume: Just got back from the new Star Trek movie. I'm still flailing and fangirling. ^.^
Starlit_Purple: *grins*
Starlit_Purple: I wanna see that one
Akume: Also about to eat chocolate cheesecake, which is an incredibly smart decision to make at 1:00 in the morning.
Yes, Star Trek: Into Darkness was FUCKING AWESOME. Awesome enough that it almost made up for a bunch of issues with the theater we went to. I loved everything about it. EVERYTHING. ♥
Other random thoughts:
★ I'm with
starandrea: I totally imagine that the mission in the beginning is how most of Kirk's missions go. ♥
★ I'm still curious to know how much of the information about the other universe Spock Prime gave Kirk during their mindmeld in the last movie Kirk actually remembers. I mean, some of it's completely useless now, but it's still a fascinating idea.
★ PIKE. -Bawls-
★ I almost cried at least four times during this movie. DAMN YOU CHRIS PINE AND YOUR BIG BLUE EYES AND PRETTY FACE.
★ I wonder if Kirk was actually injured in the attack on the captains and first officers, and then spent the rest of the movie trying to hide it. The way he brushed off/snapped at Bones - and pretty much everyone - was amusing, but something about it seemed kind of suspicious.
★ Not crazy about all the random uniforms in this one. Um, why? And some of them were pretty ugly. >.O
★ I love Spock Prime. I also love his 'I have taken a vow of silence on information from the alternate timeline. That being said ... ' Namely because he's constantly sharing information with them. (His Kirk has totally corrupted him. ♥)
★ And now Kirk has Khan blood in him. I know Bones *said* there wouldn't be any side effects or special abilities from it, but that just seems like a whole new can of worms was just opened.Hellooo fandom! ♥
★ EVERYONE CONTINUES TO BE AMAZING. Kirk is, as always, my favorite, but Scottie was pretty damn awesome many times. So was Sulu. And Bones. And Spock, and Uhura. Chekov wasn't *quite* as awesome as he was in the first movie, but he's still adorable so I don't care. Just ... everyone. They are the best. ♥
★ Y'know, I'm a Bones/Kirk fan - or at least I have been since Star Trek 2009 came out. I still am, but I have to admit that this movie made me give some serious thought to a Kirk/Spock/Uhura threesome.
★ I know a lot of people aren't happy about having another EmoSpock moment in this movie. Personally, I loved it. I loved seeing him admit that he *does* feel even when he tries not to, and the two events that have made him flip out in this new 'verse were not small things. They were seriously bad, major issues that pushed him over the edge. Also, Brother made a very valid point on the way home that I also agreed with: trying to compare the new Spock with the original emotion-wise is actually a really unfair comparison. This is a younger Spock who hasn't spent as long training to restrain his emotions. It's also a Spock that has had some serious, catastophic events in early his lifetime. Basically, it's not a fair comparison because this isn't the same Spock. He's still logical, still snarky in a vague, underhanded sort of way, but his life as already changed enough to change points of his character.
In the everlasting debate over Kirk vrs. Picard, having grown up on Star Trek: The Next Generation, I've always been for Picard. But I've got to admit, the new Kirk is starting to kick serious ass over - well, everyone really.
And now I'm off to read ALL THE FIC until my fangirly urges are finally sated.

"Never trust a vulcan."
Probably my favorite exchange from the entire movie. <3
I agreed re: Spock's emotions. I like seeing him go all craycray, but I would be lying if I didn't burst out laughing in the theater when he was all "KHAN!" lol I just couldn't help it.
But yes, they did a good job with the feels.
I'm always of the opinion that comparing this universe to the other is going to be a flawed comparrison. It's like comparring a book to a movie- obviously its not the same.
The ONLY thing I was upset about in this movie was the little girl being sick- because as TNG movie where they go back in time clearly establishes, warp travel unlocks all of human potential, and crime, disease and poverty are all gone within 20 years. So that bothered me. But otherwise, yeah, no, fantastic movie.
Also re: Kirk v Picard- I always choose Janeway. :P

Actually, there is an ep of ST Voy that celebrates first contact day, and they play the same song on their jubox as they did in the movie!
There is also just so much Canon in that movie! Timeline stuff, history, warp theory! How can anyone leave it out? I mean, that's my whole premise upon which I am planning to survive the 3rd world war so I can be around (I'll be about 80) when we first contact vulcan!

Hee! xoxo
"Jason Nyere put in for early retirement from AeroNav not long after the incident he was not permitted to remember. Subsequent hospital records indicate his treatment for repeated bouts of depression in his later years. One can imagine him scanning the night sky from his home near Lagos, uncertain of what he sought, but seeking nevertheless. Jason Nyere died of an unspecified fever in 2064, the year before Vulcans came to Earth again."

Also, shameless self plug.

❥ Also, I didn't blink at Spock yelling "Khan!" the first time I saw it (clever, I thought!) but then afterwards Marci was like, "I kind of wish they hadn't done that, not because it wasn't appropriate, but because the actual act of yelling 'KHAAAANNNN' has itself become a joke in pop culture and so when Spock does it seems more funny than it should be" (paraphrased) and she said it made her laugh. So then I flinched the second time we saw the movie, thinking about that, but the rest of the theater was solemnly silent, so I wonder if we do mostly respect Spock's pain despite the potential humor - I'm curious to watch it yet again and see how I react after being more aware of how the rest of the theater reacted! :)
❥ HAHA I CAN'T SAY ANYTHING BRIEF ABOUT THIS MOVIE
❥ I too have seen complaints about Spock being emotional, and I am honestly baffled by them! He's portrayed in the reboot as *less* emotive than he was in the original TV series, not more, and I wonder if this dissonance comes from people remembering the original movies? As Leonard Nimoy aged, he played Spock as calmer even when he was emotional ("Spock, where the hell's the power you promised me?" "One damn minute, Admiral.") and, crucially, in the first Star Trek movie he was super UNemotional as a result of his post-Enterprise years at Gol, the sole purpose of which was to purge emotion.
But in both Star Trek pilots Spock isn't portrayed as unemotional at all - he's portrayed with human-like emotional reactions. The suppression of emotion being a Vulcan ideal didn't start until after the pilots (although of course "The Cage" was remade and aired out of sequence, making Spock's reactions more entertaining, although they were set up as a contrast of his younger self vs. older), and throughout the show's run Spock is regularly seen as both 1)quietly expressing surprise, amusement, and flirtatiousness, 2)loudly losing it and crying, destroying equipment and/or attacking fellow officers (usually Jim), or making out with people.
Emotion (and the struggles associated with it) was a huge part of his character and I feel like the new movies are true to this: in the original series Jim intentionally provokes Spock into a rage four times I can think of off the top of my head, Spock cries on multiple occasions, and he kisses (at least!) Christine, Leila, and Zarabeth. And the original series was only 79 episodes long! Statistically that's ten percent of the time that he's acting dramatically emotional, and never with as serious a reason as someone dying or watching a planet explode! ♥
❥ Marci is totally with you on the Kirk/Spock mindmeld! She called the whole scene at the door at the end, when Jim says, "And this is what you would have done." She was like, HE WOULD KNOW, and I was like, ...! He would know! Well played, Star Trek; well played.
❥ Complete agreement on the uniforms. I didn't like the red ones, but I like the grey ones even less. And the hats. The hats are hilarious. But I love those mesh jerseys they wear aboard ship, mostly because they remind me of the sports jerseys we wear for pick-up soccer. And also, they're pretty xoxo
❥ AHA THREESOME RUMORS MUST BE FLYING ON THE ENTERPRISE. It's not like they were alone when Uhura came out with, "I'm not the only one who's upset; the captain's angry with you too." That, and Jim's aside, "She is right," was my favorite exchange of the movie!
YAAAAAAY I love it! And you! Thanks for letting me flail at you! Squee!
