I decided to start the [community profile] snowflake_challenge today, even though I did it last year. Namely lots of other people seem to be doing it.

I decided to limit myself to only things written this past year.

Turns out I wrote a lot this year. A lot of things I actually *like*, too.

Inside Out
Summary: Fred's always been one of the boys - except whenever someone decides he isn't.

This was for Gender Queer Fandom Fest 2013. The prompt was a transgender FtM Fred Weasley II. Something about the prompt stuck with me the moment I read it, and I just *had* to claim it. It sent me off on a lot of research about people who are transgender, about their culture and their feelings. It was heartbreaking to read, and I tried very hard to express that in the story I finally wrote. I'm not sure how well I managed it, but I'm very proud of the end result.

A Dragon for Carlos
Summary: Carlos needs a get-well gift, Karone needs to get out more, and Zhane Has a Plan to make everything better. (Cataclysm Sidestory)

I don't even really remember why I decided to give Carlos a pet dragon anymore. Maybe it was for the sheer randomness of it. I decided to write this to explain how Zhane was able to find one. It took a lot of thought and planning and research (namely browsing pictures of fantasy things and ren faires, because that's the image I was going for), but ended up being fun to write. Somewhere along the way it also became an exploration of Karone post-CtD, and how her relationship with Zhane would develop. And it gave me a lot of thoughts on Zhane, and ideas for developing both characters throughout Cataclysm and its eventual sequels.

The Nocturnal Invader
Summary: Mike has sleeping problems. Kevin has a 'Mike crawling into his bed in the middle of the night' problem.

I wrote this for [personal profile] punkpinkpower because She Had A Problem. It was the first time I'd ever attempted Mike/Kevin, which meant a lot of re-watching episodes to try and see them as a couple. The end result is something that's a little different then most of the pairings I usually write, but I like it for some reason. It works for them.

Two Sides of a Coin
Summary: Raleigh never stopped hearing his brother's voice in his head. He never realized why until the day he met a man named Jon Wasser. Jon has spent the past five years of his life trying to find a purpose and forget the past he can't remember. Raleigh Beckett is about to change all that.

I fell head over heels in love with Pacific Rim last summer, despite the fact that it broke my heart in the first five minutes. I wrote the Two Sides of a Coin series as Fix-It fic. The epilogue, Moving Forward, is actually my favorite part, but it doesn't make much sense if you haven't read the other parts first.

Crazy Cat Rangers
Summary: How many cats does it take to become a Crazy Cat Lady?

Written because [personal profile] rosabelle insisted that every time I post something, I make people cry. I decided to prove her wrong by writing about Rangers with kittens. I *think* she's the one who asked that it be Wes/Eric, but I could be wrong. Either way, it was loads of fun and fluff.

The Essence of Betrayal
Summary: Love is whatever you can still betray... Betrayal can only happen if you love. - John Lecarre

I've written a lot of versions about why A Squad worked for Grumm. This is my attempt at a less simple answer. Somehow it also led into new Random Ranger Families, ALL THE ANGST, and will eventually lead to more angst as well as Formers Who Save the Day. Once ShinyAntonioMuse stops monopolizing all my attention, anyway.

Changing Tactics.
Summary: Lauren had always known that one day her brother would master the sealing symbol and return to take over the team and defeat Master Xandred. She never expected that Jayden would have different ideas.

This one is an adventure to write. It started with imagining a Lauren who has a team, and how having friends would change her. It also gave me a chance to write an Antonio and Jayden who grew up together, who know each other intimately and are completely devoted to one another. Trying to work out how these things work together and what they change of canon has been both fun and fascinating.

Gender Queer Fandom Fest 2013 was a writing challenge I discovered through someone else. It caught my attention immediately, and was filled with such wonderful prompts! It also challenged me, making me consider things like sexuality and transgender in characters that I never had before.

Power Rangers Day 2013 is really [personal profile] rosabelle's baby, as she came up with it and did like, 98% of the work. But it led to a lot of great fic, and as much as I love writing romance, it became kind of a challenge to write gen. (It also led to my new headcanon that Sky Is Not Allowed To Drive The Jeep, which was loads of fun to create. ^.^)
